From Middle Ages prospectors were coming to Krkonoše, closely followed by miners. Only slowly the underground started giving up its treasures. And right here, in the insides of Sněžka, where the ore mining was the most extensive, the legends originated about the hidden treasures belonging to Krakonoš, the mountain ghost. You can enjoy the biggest underground spaces excavated mainly in the 19th century in person.
Entrance into the mine is at the former cottage Kovárna, on the blue marked tourist trail leading to Slezská bouda. It takes about one and half hour to walk the 5 km long distance from the info-center Veselý Výlet in Pec pod Sněžkou. Each group entering the underground consists of 12 people. The groups tend to fill up quickly, therefore we recommend you to book in advance in the info-center Veselý Výlet in Pec pod Sněžkou, phone: +420 499 736 130, and buy your ticket there. Please note that it is necessary to be on the marked spot at the former cottage Kovárna, where you will be picked up by your guide, at least 10 minutes before the intended entry time.
Rucksacks, documents and similar can be left in the guarded shed in front of the underground entrance. There is no toilet available at the entrance into the underground. There are two underground trails to choose from. Trail A, which is for everyone and trail B for the demanding customers.
Trail A is for everyone, who is not afraid of narrow profile of the tunnels, steep ladders and coldness of the underground. We lend you a coat and a helmet with lamp. Underground you'll spend maximum of 45 minutes. It is necessary to wear firm shoes, warmer clothes and the visitors shouldn't be younger than 10 years of age. The temperature in the mine is around 7°C = 44.6 F and high humidity.
Opening times of trail A: July - August, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
Always at: 10:30 am; 1:30 pm; 4:30 pm
Admission 180,- CZK.
Trail B - the long trail
Trail B is intended for visitors who are more physically fit. You'll see the whole mine (i.e. including the trail A). The 50 meter depth is reached by steel ladders with safety baskets, footbridges and stairs. The ladders are maximally 5 meters long. Please be prepared for glimpses into the depth. You will enjoy the spirit of an old mine and understand the hard work of miners carrying out the dug out ore to the surface. On the descent you will see the biggest stopes in Krkonoše, water reservoirs, flooded excavations, rock pillars, unique geological structures, remnants of ore and in the end you will enter the modern corridor with mining equipment, which was abandonend in 1959. You'll be surprised how big the underground of Sněžka is. It will take you about 2 hours to get through the introduction about safe climbing on the ladders, changing into the overalls, descent into depths of almost 50 meters and the subsequent ascent back to the surface. We will lend you a light overall, gloves and a helmet with lamp. Because of the shallow ponds in corridors, uneven rock terrain and climbing the ladders, it is necessary to wear firm shoes. You should also wear warmer clothes, as you will be spending long time at the 7°C = 44.6 F temperature. Only physically fit people and children from the age of 10 accompanied by adults are allowed. Please make sure you have considered your abilities carefully, before deciding for this trail.
Opening times of trail B: July - August,
Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Always at: 10:00 am, 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
Admission 350,- CZK.
